How to Create a Link in a Page or Post

New to WordPress? Creating a link is an early skill you can learn. We are assuming you are using the newer version of WordPress and all our images showing you the steps will be based on the newer version. If you are using the Classic Editor, the steps are similar, it will just look a bit different than the photos below.

In our previous blog posts, Adding a PDF to Your Page or Post – Version 1 and Adding a PDF to your Page or Post – Version 2, we give instructions on how to upload a PDF and link to that PDF once it is in your Media Library.

This post will give the basics for creating both text links and image links. These links can be to a document or image in your Media Library, a page or post in your website or to any website on the internet. Let’s get started:

Creating a Text Link

Open the page or post you want to add the link to.

Click and drag to highlight the text you’d like to make into a link. A toolbar will appear above your text.

Images shows text highlighted and toolbar above the highlighted text.

Click the chainlink icon (now blue since it is in use) and a set of link options will open below your text.

If you are linking to an existing page or post within your website, just type the name of that page or post in the “Search or type url” box (outlined with a blue border) and click the arrow to apply the link.

If you are linking to another website, paste the URL in the same box and click the arrow to apply the link.

Update your page and check your link on the live version of your page or post.

Creating an Image Link

Open the page or post and navigate to the image you want to become a link. Click on the image and a toolbar will appear above the image.

Click the chainlink icon (now blue since it is in use) and a set of link options will open below the toolbar and over the image.
